Thank you for auditioning for the Hayes School of Music! We are excited you have chosen to apply here.

This Music Theory Placement Exam helps determine your placement into our theory classes and helps ensure you are registered for the appropriate courses and sections. All incoming freshmen should take the Music Theory Placement Exam as part of the audition process on the same day they audition.

We believe that it is important to know music fundamentals with accuracy and fluency. For this reason, sections of the Music Theory Placement Exam have time limits and the exam will progress if you do not complete the questions within time. Please do not click back on your browser, that will exit you from the exam and you will be required to start from the beginning.

The exam consists of 5 sections of questions regarding written elements of music theory:
Pitch Identification - Identify 10 in 2 minutes
Interval Identification - Identify 5 in 1 minute 45 seconds
Scale Identification - Identify 5 in 1 minute 45 seconds
Major Key Signature Identification - Identify 5 in 1 minute 15 seconds
Minor Key Signature Identification - Identify 5 in 1 minute 30 seconds

Please take this exam on a computer (preferably in the Chrome browser), not a tablet or phone. Please raise your hand if you have a question or need assistance during the exam and a proctor will be with you shortly.
